Jonathan's Kitchen and Komatose

A Rustic and Rugged Restaurant and Night Club in Hyderabad

The design of the restaurant and night club draws its inspiration from the rugged and rustic yet picturesque landscape on the outskirts of the city of Hyderabad, India. The distressed look of the restaurant and the night club not only resonates with the theme of the club but also imbibes the spirit and freshness of nature.

The design of Jonathan's Kitchen and Komatose explores the possibility of engaging sophisticated craftspeople like masons and metal fabricators to create spaces that engage people through their spatial and tactile quality. The restaurant and night club have a distinct spatial quality achieved by a controlled juxtaposition of materials and articulation of the envelopes defining these spaces.

The restaurant features a rugged textured surface of lime yellow color slate and an articulated brick wall, complemented by a relatively plain grey bison board partition. The night club, on the other hand, showcases stretched metal sheets with a patina of rust. These materials create a unique and visually stimulating atmosphere for the patrons.

The design team utilized wire cut brick walls, lime yellow slate called Shahbad stone for cladding, granite stone and teakwood flooring, cement-rendered bar counters, and expanded sheet metal paneling. The use of these materials adds to the rustic and rugged aesthetic of the space.

The space was divided into three distinct zones: an entrance foyer, a night club area with a mezzanine, and a restaurant space. The challenge was to segregate the two spaces under one roof without bringing in too many materials while retaining their individuality. The design team successfully achieved this by carefully selecting and combining materials.

Jonathan's Kitchen and Komatose provides not only a place to consume and converse but also just the right amount of visual stimulation. The design project started in March 2014 and was completed in February 2015 in Hyderabad, Telangana, India.

This unique design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2017 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach. It integrates industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to its patrons.
